G-SHOCK 30th Anniversary SHOCK THE WORLD 2013 Conference + Party

2013 is an important year for Casio G-SHOCK because it marked their 30 years anniversary in the timepiece innovation.

To celebrate this memorable occasion, The G-SHOCK 'SHOCK THE WORLD' tour has make its stop here in Singapore, after going to 50 cities this year including New York, Paris, Barcelona, Shanghai and Beijing.

Across major cities worldwide, the “SHOCK THE WORLD” movement has brought together thousands of people since its inception in 2009 across continents and cultures to celebrate the brand and its legacy of trendsetting innovation in timepieces.

The media conference was held at The Coliseum, Resorts World Sentosa. I haven't been here for a really long time, I was finally back again.

This year marked G-SHOCK’s 30th anniversary. Since its birth in 1983, G-SHOCK has continued its unrestrained evolution while retaining its unique basic structure. It has 10-year battery life, 10-bar water resistance and 10-meter dropping shock resistance.

No wonder it is also known as the unbreakable watch.

Without further ado, let's kickstart the conference.

The host of the day was MTV VJ and popular television personality, Max Loong.

First speaker up was Hiroshi Nakamura, Managing Director of Casio Computer Co., Ltd.

Casio Computer Co., Ltd. is now one of the world's leading manufacturers of consumer electronics products and business equipment solutions through the introduction of innovative and imaginative products.

Next up was Kikuo Ibe, Father of G-SHOCK.

Kikuo Ibe is the Research and Development Chief Engineer of Casio Japan who has ultimately defined the brilliance of combining style and utility, along with superior craftsmanship.

Mr Ibe had shared with us the story on how the G-SHOCK came about.

There was an incident where someone knocked onto him and his watch had dropped to the ground in pieces. The watch was a gift from his father and he cherished it very much.

This incident had inspired him to challenge the conventional wisdom that a wrist watch always had to be handled with care. Thus, Ibe-san’s goal was to create a watch that could withstand 10-meters impact resistance, 10-bar water resistance and 10-years battery life. With his hard work and effort put in, each G-SHOCK watch has the perfect embodiment of the latest in shock resistance technology with cutting-edge design.

I am really impressed with Ibe-san's determination and positive attitude. Without his perseverance, G-SHOCK will not be what it is today.

A live experiment was carried out. About 10 watches were dropped to the floor from a basket that was placed 3 metres high. All of the watches were still perfectly good and working well.

Incredible right?

Next speaker was Daniel Lee, Marketing and PR Manager of Casio Singapore.

To celebrate G-SHOCK’s 30th birthday in Singapore, the team had put together an exhilarating showcase of dance performances by award-winning artists who are masters in their own crafts and collaborated with some of the most talented designers to unveil G-SHOCK designs that are truly one-of-its-kind and unique to Singapore.

G-SHOCK has collaborated with two of our most talented local designers - Keith Png and the duo designers from Depression, Kenny Lim and Andrew Loh.

The event featured the unveiling of limited edition stylized G-SHOCK watches designed by local design icon.

I am sure many of you are familiar with Keith Png. He is not only a designer, but also a style guru, TV show host and retail enterpreneur. He has worked with many Asian and local celebrities like Zhang Ziyi, Lin Chi Ling, Fann Wong and Jeanette Aw.

The design is inspired by the most "Fashionable" reason for being late. The inspiration is a cheeky take, marrying fashion with time by utilizing a popular urban term "Fashionably Late". On the other hand is the term "What's your excuse?" So if you arrive early for your appointment, flash "What's your excuse?" to the other party. And if you are late, flah "Fashionably Late".

Let the watch speaks for you.

Depression is a former Singapore advertising copywriter-art director team - Kenny Lin and Andrew Loh, who turned into fashion designers. Their medical-themed label aims to meet the needs, occasions and aspirations of the creative professional.
Depression has two shops in Orchard Road and is stocked in over 20 select shops in Taipei, Tokyo, USA and Paris. Celebrities wearing Depression include Taboo from Black Eyed Peas and Jam Hsiao.

The design is inspired by the different genres of great people who would wear the G-SHOCK, such as the pilot or the DJ. More than just a fashion accessory, it is a symbol that inspires the wearer to reach towards his or her ambitions.
The last segment of the media conference, Q&A session with the panel.

Yingzi had a question for them.
