Happenings in July - SAF Born a Hero Project + Artica Hair Studio

1 July is also known as the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Day. Speaking of Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), the first thing that usually comes to mind will be uniformed male soldiers defending the nation. Few would associate the success of the SAF with women who hail from different walks of life, and the contributions they have made towards our country’s defence system. 

As part of the commemoration for the SAF’s 50th anniversary (SAF50), women’s website Material World has launched the Born a Hero project to celebrate the unsung heroes behind Singapore’s defence. 

There was a celebratory event held at TANGS Orchard on SAF Day. At the event, participants were treated to exclusive discounts and deals – including a $10 TANGS voucher.

The event also include complimentary refreshments from The Providore.

Thanks GF for bringing me along. Haven't seen her for nearly a month, this must be our longest record of not meeting up each other. Must take a photo together.

While we enjoyed our time shopping, we were glad that the Born a Hero initiative with Material World gives us an opportunity to thank and honour women for the various roles they play towards protecting Singapore.

Wednesday 8/7/15

Took leave to have a short break from work and to pamper myself. Just realized I have not take leave ever since my exam till now. Time to have a break man. KP took leave together with me too and came over to my house to look for me. We make plan to colour our hair together at Artica Hair Studio @ Far East Plaza. Before we went for our appointment, we have our brunch at Toast Box.

I have traditional breakfast set.

These days, I have been eating the american breakfast. And now, I have cravings for the traditional breakfast - Kaya butter roti with soft boiled egg. Still remembered those days when I was young, I would join my parents to coffeeshop every Sunday morning to enjoy this traditional breakfast set. My all-time favourite breakfast.

Kaya-butter toast.

It was crunchy on the outside and heavenly soft within. The sweetness of the kaya and a slice of butter bursting in my mouth. Delicious.

Finally satisfied my cravings for soft boiled eggs.

Add some soy sauce and pepper, stir it well and drink it down. So awesome!

Upon settling down, the stylist brought me a drink menu. I selected hot green tea.

I did colour, cut and treatment. Currently, Artica Hair Studio is having a promotion and the package I'm doing is $130. The entire process took me two and half hours. This is my second visit to Artica and I'm very satisfied everytime I came here. They are 2 hair stylists handling my hair and both of them did a great job. I enjoyed the hair washing, it was so comfortable and they massaged my hair too. I almost fall asleep during the hair wash. Another reason why I love coming back is because they don't hard-sell their services or products. Hard-sell is something I loathe the most. Once you do that to me, sorry I am not coming back to you again.

We walked over to Scotts Square to fill our stomach again at Dome Cafe. We decided to order something that is not too filling so that there will be room for dinner.

Farm mushroom soup. The rich and creamy mushroom soup served with garlic bread.

My new hair colour. I did a brown colour that looked natural and not too harsh. Something different from my usual style.

Chicken and mushroom pie served with potato chips and lettuce.

One day just passed so fast, this was how I spent my off day - eating and doing the things I like.

Lovely Brunch at Hediard Café-Boutique + River Hongbao 2015

On the 4th day of Chinese New Year, my cousin came over to look for me after her work and we set off together for cafe hopping. This time round, we went to Hediard Café-Boutique situated at Tudor Court in Tanglin.

I was being introduced to Hediard Café during the #BlogMeetSG event. 

With a rich heritage of 160 years of tradition and know-how, the house of Hédiard excels in exceptional gastronomical products and creations. The cafe-boutique serves exquisite brunch, dessert and a wide selection of teas, and the French Gourmet Gifts Boutique.

We wanted something more filling so we went for  Eggs Bénédicte where we were served with 2 poached eggs on toast with Parma ham, shaved parmesan and hollandaise sauce.

That happens to us when we have meal together. 

I have hot chocolate while my cousin had ice mocha.

We were seated next to the window and the lighting as well as the picture effort turned out good.

The egg benedict tasted great with the egg yolk snoozing out.

I also ordered the Café Gourmand. It comes in a mini-platter of exquisite delicacies of the day together with a cup of black coffee. I actually top up a little more and change it to hot chocolate. 

The delicacies include:

1 Marzipan

1 Fruit Jelly

2 macarons

1 Orangette (orange peel coated with chocolate)

I love macaron the best.

Enjoying my drink at the last.

I enjoyed my time lazing at the cafe, sipping my drink, enjoying the moment and not thinking anything about my work or assignment.

My bill added up to $50 for 2 pax. Personally I think that the food here is a little pricey and the portion is quite small. Thank goodness, we were given $30 vouchers to utilise. So we only paid $20. Nevertheless, the food tasted good and worth giving it a try.

Right after the brunch, we visited River Hongbao 2015 held at Floating Platform @ Marina Bay on the fourth day of Chinese New Year. 2015 is a special year because we are celebrating Singapore’s 50 years of Independence too.


Let's celebrate SG50 together and welcoming the Year of the Goat.

This year, we travelled back in time to 1965 where we recollected some of the precious moments and traditions of our nation’s celebration of Lunar New Year over the past 50 years as part of SG50.

This must be the tallest God of Fortune that I ever seen. The God of Fortune is 18-metre tall.

All the displays were really beautiful and eye-catching. We can't wait to check out all the displays.

舞狮贺年 Lion Dance Cheers.

Lion dance performance has been a part of our Chinese New Year culture. They will always visit our house on the second day of Chinese New Year.

50 years of independence did not come by easy. Sincerely thank our pioneer generation for the perseverance for building up the country and transforming them into today's cosmopolitan city. Thank you very much.

The chinese Zodiac: Monkey.

2015 looks set to be a smooth-sailing year. Ample support from benefactors shall help propel you closer to success.

Merdeka Bridge was built in 1955 and completed in 1956. The name "Merdeka" was given to mark Singapore’s self-government status resulting from the 1955 elections.

Wishing Well.

Many were making their wishes and trying to toss their coins to hit the bells.

Feeling hungry and thirsty, we went to check out the food street where there were vast variety of local delicacies, including Hainanese chicken rice, bak kut teh, yong tau foo, satay, Katong laksa, hokkien prawn noodles and ice-kacang served.

We went for mango juice and tako balls.

It was an enjoyable day out. It was a well deserved break for me, I was coping at home the past 2 days rushing for my projects. Need to take a break now and continuing doing later on.

Chef William has more than 40 years of processing excellent culinary skills. He has appeared on Golden Age cooking TV serial in year 2009 as guest chef and also cooked for His Excellency, President Mr. S.R. Nathan at Singapore Turf Club.

Treat your loved ones to all five detectable creations of the weekend menu:

1. Classic Breakfast ($18++)

This classic breakfast features the full range of must-have English breakfast items like the golden hash browns, chicken sausage, baked beans, toasted chef’s choice bread and crispy turkey bacon. Sautéed portobello mushroom and cherry tomatoes at the side.

Here was our sampling version of classic breakfast.

Classic breakfast is one of my all-time favourite brunch selection because it is has the ideal breakfast ingredients I am looking for. The sunny side up was slight runny and harshbrown was crispy. The sautéed mushroom was soft and juicy. I like this very much.

2. Salmon Bagel ($16++)

Indulge in smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, grilled tomatoes, mesclun salad all perfectly encrust in a tasty toasted bagel with homemade zesty lemon cream spread.

Though this may looked simple, it tasted delicious. The scramble egg was moist and delicate. The smoked salmon tasted just perfect.

3. Slipper Lobster Croissant ($18++)

Nothing is short of premium when this delicious croissant is generously filled with a mix of grilled slipper lobster tossed with chopping celery, chive, tomato in Japanese dressing and tobiko. Accompanied by truffle fries, this is an irresistible and elevating dish!

My next favourite after classic breakfast.

The lobster croissant was delectable and the meat was fresh. The truffles fries were well seasoned and appetizing.  It was pretty addictive and you can't stop yourself from wanting more.

4. Egg-citing Benedict ($16++)

This is no ordinary dish. 

After countless weeks of experimenting and perfecting his recipe, Chef William promise that you will be back for more of these poached eggs resting on toasted English muffin base, topped with a generous serving of turkey ham or smoked salmon, sautéed mushroom and grilled baby tomatoes and mesclun salad.

Indulging in egg benedict is the best way to kickstart the weekend. Indulge in the beautiful poached eggs set on the muffin. Feel so tempting to go back for the second time to try it.

5. BeRe!Licious Pancake ($12++)

Attention all berries lover! Do not miss this mixed berries compote drizzled with chocolate and strawberry sauce. 

If you don't like chocolates, you can opt for butter and maple syrup for a healthier choice.

Yet another simple but delicious berries pancake.

The pancake was soft and fluffy. Coated with chocolate and strawberry sauce, the pancake tasted sweet yummy.
